This server is kept or housed by the web hosting company and it sells the bandwidth to its customers. The service provider maintains the servers by checking its network connectivity, by monitoring the hardware and routing equipment. Managed vs Unmanaged Dedicated Servers
There are two types of options given to the dedicated server clients. The first option is to manage their servers by themselves; also known as unmanaged servers. All the management duties are given in control of the purchaser. He in turn has the responsibility of upgrading, installing the desired software, monitoring the system, applying patches, and kernel upgrades. In unmanaged server system the client is solely responsible for his day-to-day operations and maintenance. The job of the service provider is just to monitor network, ensure connectivity and repair hardware. Some service managers offer partial services like software upgrades but the control of the server is in the hands of his clients. The second option is that the services and the control of the dedicated servers is in hands of the web hosting company. This is also known as managed web hosting services. They are responsible for security updates, managing network connections, software upgrades, and applying patches. The web hosting company also maintains the hardware. A managed dedication server solution works well for the customer with limited server management experience or limited time in being able to perform the duties necessary to keep a server running and online.
Using managed dedicated server is preferable when one does not have the required staff to maintain the server. Managed dedicated server is much cheaper as compared to the unmanaged dedicated server because the staff required maintaining the server is expensive.
Cheaper staff might not be that qualified to maintain the server and might cause problems.
